Doing laundry for the first time can feel surprisingly overwhelming. Between deciphering cryptic garment care tags, selecting the right wash cycles, and figuring out how much detergent to use, it is easy to worry about shrinking a favorite sweater or ruining delicate fabrics. However, mastering laundry basics does not require complex routines or expensive products. By establishing simple habits, understanding basic sorting techniques, and using proper temperature settings, anyone can keep their wardrobe fresh, soft, and long-lasting.
Sorting Clothes the Right Way
The key to preventing ruined clothes begins before you even touch the washing machine dial. Proper sorting protects fabric fibers and keeps bright colors from bleeding onto lighter garments.
Start by separating your laundry into three basic categories: lights, darks, and towels or bed linens. Light fabrics include white shirts, pastel tops, and light gray items. Dark loads should contain jeans, black shirts, navy pants, and deep reds. Washing darks together prevents excess dye from bleeding into lighter items and preserves dark colors over time.
Keep bath towels, bed sheets, and heavy blankets in a separate load altogether. Heavy cotton towels produce significant friction and lint during the wash cycle, which can pill delicate clothing and prevent shirts from getting completely clean. Always check pockets for loose change, tissues, lip balm, or keys before throwing clothes into the basket, and zip up zippers so metal teeth do not snag loose knits.
