Tackling Common Fabric and Laundry Stains
Laundry mishaps happen constantly, but even set-in spots on clothing can be safely lifted using items already sitting in your kitchen cabinet.
-
Grease and Oil Spots: Engine oil, cooking spray, butter, and cosmetic foundation leave dark, translucent rings on clothes. Cover the spot immediately with cornstarch or baking soda to draw out excess surface oil. After letting it sit for fifteen minutes, brush off the powder and apply a concentrated liquid dish soap directly to the area. Work the soap into the fibers with your fingers, let it rest for twenty minutes, and wash in the warmest water safe for the fabric.
-
Red Wine and Berry Pigments: The vivid colors in berries and wine stem from natural tannins. Flush the back of the fabric with cold water to push out pigment. Next, create a solution of equal parts liquid dish soap and three percent hydrogen peroxide. Soak the spot in this mixture until the color fades, then launder normally.
-
Coffee and Tea Marks: Blot away excess liquid immediately. Soak the garment in a solution of two cups of warm water mixed with one tablespoon of white distilled vinegar and one teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent for thirty minutes before washing.
Restoring Upholstery, Carpets, and Rugs
Furniture and floor coverings endure heavy foot traffic and daily use, making them prime targets for stubborn spills.
To clean deep carpet spots, start by sprinkling a generous layer of baking soda over the affected zone. Lightly mist the powder with a mixture of equal parts warm water and white vinegar. The mild fizzing reaction helps loosen embedded grime from deep within carpet pile. Let the area dry completely into a crust, then thoroughly vacuum up the residue.
