Open the door halfway and gently pull upward on the door handle or outer edge. Watch the top metal hinge plate closely. If you see movement or a gap forming between the hinge plate and the wooden jamb, the screws have lost their grip.

Take a manual screwdriver and attempt to tighten all the screws on both the door leaf and the frame leaf of the top hinge.

If a screw spins freely without catching, the screw hole in the wooden frame is stripped.

To repair a stripped screw hole, remove the loose screw, insert wooden toothpicks or wooden dowels dipped in wood glue into the hole, trim them flush, and allow them to dry. Reinsert the screw into the newly reinforced wood to restore a tight grip.
2. Seasonal Changes, Humidity, and Wood Swelling
If your door suddenly starts sticking during humid summer months or after heavy rain, environmental moisture is likely the primary cause. Solid wood and composite interior doors absorb atmospheric moisture like a sponge.
When relative humidity rises, the wooden core of the door expands across its grain. This causes the door slab to widen slightly, closing the tiny clearance gap between the edge of the door and the wooden frame.

Inspect the perimeter of the door to locate where paint is rubbing or transfer is occurring. Common trouble spots include the top edge and the latch edge.

Before taking a sander or plane to the wood, try running an air conditioner or a dehumidifier near the affected doorway for 24 to 48 hours to draw out trapped interior moisture.

If the swelling is severe and persistent, remove the door slab, lightly sand down the binding edge, and seal the exposed bare wood with a coat of moisture-resistant primer and paint. Sealing all six sides of a wooden door—including the top and bottom hidden edges—prevents future seasonal expansion.
