4. Clogged or Improperly Installed Water Filter
If your fridge features an internal or external water filter for the dispenser, an issue with the filter assembly can lead to steady water drops inside or underneath the unit.
The Problem: An old, clogged filter can cause pressure to build up, forcing water past the seal. Alternatively, if a new filter wasn’t installed correctly or if an incorrect model was used, the O-ring seals won’t seat properly.
The Fix: Remove the water filter and inspect the housing and O-rings for cracks or misalignment. Reinstall the filter, making sure it clicks or twists securely into place. If it hasn’t been changed in over six months, replace it with an OEM-certified filter.
5. Unlevel Refrigerator Positioning
Refrigerators need to sit slightly tilted back so that coolant flows properly and water drains smoothly toward the back drain hole.
The Problem: If the front of the fridge is level with or lower than the back, condensate water may fail to reach the defrost drain. Instead, it can pool inside the fresh food compartment and seep out through the front door seals.
The Fix: Use a bubble level on top of the fridge. Adjust the front leveling legs or rollers so that the front of the refrigerator sits roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch higher than the back.
