Clean Kitchen Surfaces Every Day
Countertops are constantly exposed to food particles, spills, and bacteria.
To keep surfaces clean:
- Wipe countertops before and after cooking.
- Use hot water and dish soap for routine cleaning.
- Disinfect surfaces regularly using a food-safe disinfectant.
- Pay extra attention to areas where raw meat has been prepared.
Don’t forget cabinet handles, drawer pulls, and light switches, as these are frequently touched throughout the day.
Sanitize Cutting Boards Properly
Cutting boards can easily become contaminated when preparing raw meat or vegetables.
To reduce cross-contamination:
- Use separate cutting boards for raw meat and fresh produce.
- Wash cutting boards immediately after use with hot, soapy water.
- Sanitize plastic boards in the dishwasher if they are dishwasher-safe.
- Replace cutting boards that have deep cuts or cracks where bacteria can hide.
Color-coded cutting boards can also help keep food preparation organized and safe.
Wash Dishcloths and Sponges Frequently
Kitchen sponges are known to collect bacteria because they remain damp for long periods.
To keep them clean:
- Replace sponges regularly.
- Wash dishcloths in hot water after each use.
- Allow cloths and sponges to dry completely between uses.
- Consider using disposable paper towels when cleaning up raw meat juices.
A clean cloth is much safer than repeatedly using a dirty sponge.
